Cabinet approves SMALL CLAIMS COURT in Sri Lanka

On June 14, 2021, the Cabinet approved in principle the concept of a small rights court proposed by the Minister of Justice.

The Committee of Small Claims proposed by the Committee should be empowered to hear and decide less than 1.5 million matters relating to mutual liquidation, recovery, movable property and generous claims.

The proposed Minority Court has been given a maximum period of 18 months to decide a matter and the Minor Court of Appeal has proposed another year for the Civil Court of Appeal to complete the final appeals.
