Conditions for selling alcohol online

The Excise Department says that the Ministry of Finance has given approval for the sale of liquor through online services in supermarkets.

Commissioner General of Excise J. Mr. Gunasiri said the approval was given under several conditions.

Under the terms, the sale of liquor is prohibited and a mechanism must be put in place to ensure the sale of alcohol to consumers over the age of 21.

The Commissioner General of Excise further stated that guidelines on the manner in which liquor should be served will be published soon.

He said the National Operations Center for the Prevention of covid-19 has not yet given permission in this regard.

The approval of the National Operations Center should be obtained for the sale of liquor through internet distribution services during the island-wide travel ban enforced in the country. J. Mr. Gunasiri said.

The sale of liquor was banned in accordance with the island-wide travel ban imposed on May 21 due to the Kovid virus epidemic.
